Background Remover
Auto-cut the subject. Transparent PNG or color fill.
What does the background remover do?
The freeimgtool background remover separates the main subject of a photo from everything else. Behind the scenes it uses OpenCV's GrabCut algorithm, an iterative graph-cut technique that estimates which pixels belong to the foreground and which belong to the background, seeded with the assumption that the subject sits roughly in the middle of the frame.
Choose how to deliver the cut-out. Transparent PNG is the default — clean alpha, ready to drop into another canvas. White or Blackgive you a flat solid background for product shots. Green screen is handy for video editors who want a chroma key source.

Tips for the cleanest cut
- Center the subject in the frame.
- Use a plain background — flat color or sky works best.
- Avoid backgrounds that share colors with the subject.
- Hair and fine fur edges are the hardest cases; the cut may be slightly soft there.
- For studio-quality cuts on humans, we have a deep model on the roadmap.

Frequently asked questions
Is the background remover free?
Yes. No signup, no premium tier. Display ads support the site.
What is the maximum upload size?
Five megabytes per photo. Compress first if your file is larger.
Is this a deep-learning background remover?
Not on this tier. The current build uses OpenCV GrabCut, which is fast, free of license issues, and works well when the subject is roughly centered with a clean background. A deep U2Net-style remover is on the roadmap for the upgraded server.
What output format do I get?
Transparent output is a PNG with alpha. Solid-color outputs are JPG.
What if the cut looks rough at the edges?
Re-shoot with a plainer background, or pick a photo where the subject has stronger color contrast against the background. GrabCut struggles when subject and background share colors.
Will it preserve hair and fur detail?
Partially. Hair edges are the classical hard case for GrabCut. The edges are smoothed slightly to blend into the new background, which trades some detail for fewer obvious jagged pixels.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The upload box accepts photos straight from the camera roll.
Is my photo stored?
Uploads are kept only long enough to return a download link and are removed automatically. Privacy policy has the details.
