Photo to Sketch
Pencil-sketch any photo — gray, color or stylized.
What is the photo-to-pencil-sketch tool?
The freeimgtool pencil sketch tool turns a regular photo into a drawing. It runs OpenCV's non-photorealistic rendering functions, which apply edge-preserving smoothing and then a sketch shader to mimic pencil strokes on paper. The result looks hand-drawn but takes one second.
Three styles are available. Pencil (gray) gives the classic graphite sketch look. Pencil (color)keeps the color palette of the original photo but renders it with the same sketchy texture. Stylized paint turns the photo into a smooth, painterly version with bold edges, similar to an oil painting filter.
How to use it
- Click the upload box and pick a photo (up to 5 MB).

Why use this sketch tool
Pencil sketch apps usually want a phone install, an email signup, and an in-app purchase before they hand over a clean file. This one runs in a browser tab and gives the file straight away. The output stays sharp because the source photo is processed at up to 2000 pixels on the long edge, which is enough for prints and social posts.
Who uses it
Designers prototyping illustrated covers. Bloggers needing a non-photo header image. Teachers making worksheets from real photos. Social media managers refreshing tired stock photos. Anyone making a personalised gift from a phone shot.
Frequently asked questions
Is the sketch tool free?
Yes. No signup, no premium tier. Display ads support the site.
What is the maximum upload size?
Five megabytes per photo. Compress first with the image compressor if needed.
What styles look best on portraits?
Gray pencil for a classic portrait sketch. Color pencil if you want to keep skin tones and the outfit colors. Stylized paint is bolder and works better on landscapes than faces.
Is the output watermarked?
No. The downloaded file is clean.
What output format do I get?
JPG at high quality. JPG is the most portable choice for sharing on social and emailing.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The upload box opens the camera roll or camera straight from the browser.
Is the original photo stored?
Uploads are kept only long enough to return a download link and are removed automatically. Privacy policy has the details.
Why does the result look different from a real pencil drawing?
The filter mimics pencil strokes mathematically. It is not an AI generator that re-draws the scene. Expect a clean, sketch-textured version of your photo rather than a fully re-imagined one.
