What is the document scanner?

The freeimgtool document scanner turns a casual phone photo of a page into a flat, cropped, well-contrasted scan. Upload a photo taken at any angle. The tool runs OpenCV edge detection, finds the four corners of the document, and applies a perspective transform so the result looks like it was placed on a flatbed scanner. An adaptive threshold filter cleans the background to pure white and the text to crisp black.

No app install, no account, no watermark. Works on a phone or a laptop. The output is a JPG that fits straight into an email, a PDF tool, or a school portal.

How to use it

  1. Take a photo of the document on a contrasting surface — a dark desk works better than a busy patterned tablecloth.
  2. Click the upload box and pick the photo (up to 5 MB).
  3. Choose an output style: Black & white for text-heavy pages, Grayscale for documents with shading, or Color for receipts and forms with color highlights.
  4. Click Scan.
  5. Click Download to save the result.

Why use this scanner

Dedicated scanner apps work fine but they upsell, gate exports behind ads, or push you into a cloud account. freeimgtool runs in a browser tab, gives you the image immediately, and removes it from storage after the download link is generated. It is the quickest way to turn one phone photo into one scan.

Who uses it

Students submitting handwritten assignments to a course portal. Freelancers digitizing receipts for tax records. Renters sending signed leases back to landlords. Anyone who needs to email a document right now but does not have a real scanner nearby.

Frequently asked questions

What if it does not find the document edges?

You will see a warning and the tool will apply the chosen filter to the original photo without warping. Better lighting, a plain dark surface, and the whole page in frame usually fix it. Re-take the photo and try again.

Is this really free?

Yes. No signup, no premium tier. Display ads support the site.

What is the maximum upload size?

Five megabytes per photo. That covers a typical phone shot. If your photo is larger, our image compressor will shrink it first.

Black & white vs grayscale vs color?

Black & white is the cleanest for pages of text and gives the smallest file. Grayscale keeps soft shading like photocopies. Color keeps logos, stamps, and highlighter marks.

Will it OCR the text into a Word file?

Not yet. The current build only produces a clean image scan. Text recognition is on the roadmap.

What output format do I get?

JPG at high quality. JPG is the most portable choice for emailing, attaching, and uploading.

Does it work on a phone browser?

Yes. The upload box opens the camera on most phones so you can shoot and scan in one tap.

Is my photo stored?

Uploads are kept only long enough to return a download link and are removed automatically. Privacy policy has the details.
