The browser method
Open the freeimgtool compressor in Safari, upload the photo from your camera roll, compress, save.
Everything happens on the phone itself. The photo doesn't get uploaded to a server, processed somewhere else, and downloaded back — the compression runs in Safari's JavaScript engine using the same image APIs that any photo app uses. That keeps it fast and private.
- Open Safari and go to the Image Compressor.
- Tap the upload box.
- Pick Photo Library and choose the photo.
- Move quality to 70.
- Tap Compress, then Download. Long-press to Save to Photos.
Why iPhone photos are big
iPhones save photos at high resolution by default (~4000 px on most models) and often as HEIC for storage but JPG for sharing. Either way, the source is much bigger than most sharing use cases need.
The exact resolution depends on the model. iPhone 15 and 16 main cameras shoot at 24 MP by default (about 6000 x 4000 px) and 48 MP in ProRAW mode (around 8000 x 6000 px). Even older iPhones shoot at 12 MP (4032 x 3024). That's far more pixel density than any screen smaller than a 4K TV can display.
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's preferred format and produces files roughly 50% smaller than JPG at the same quality. The catch is compatibility — many Windows apps, web forms, and older systems can't read HEIC. iPhones automatically convert to JPG when sharing to apps that don't accept HEIC, but the conversion produces a larger file than the original HEIC.
Live Photos compound the size. Each Live Photo is actually a still plus a 3-second video, doubling or tripling the storage compared to a regular photo. When sharing, the video portion usually drops, but the still that gets shared is often still in HEIC's still-frame format.
Smaller dimensions help too
Resize to 1600 px on the long edge before compressing if the photo is destined for a chat or social feed — combined with quality 70, that gets the file under 500 KB while still looking crisp on any phone.
For specific platforms, target the exact recommended size. Instagram displays feed images at 1080 px wide; sending anything larger is wasted bandwidth. WhatsApp recompresses what you send anyway, so sending a smaller, well-compressed file results in better final quality than letting WhatsApp recompress a large one.
If you're sending to someone who'll view on desktop, 2000 px on the long edge is enough for retina laptop screens. Going beyond 2400 px rarely helps because most viewing displays cap out below that anyway.
iOS-specific tricks that don't require apps
Mail's automatic size picker. Compose an email, attach a photo, and Mail offers Small / Medium / Large / Actual Size at the bottom. Medium drops a 4 MB photo to roughly 200-400 KB. This is the fastest path if you're already going to email the result.
Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible saves new photos as JPG instead of HEIC. Files end up larger than HEIC but compatible everywhere. Useful if you regularly share with Windows or older Android users.
Settings → Camera → Formats → High Efficiency keeps photos in HEIC. Smaller files for the same quality, with the compatibility caveat above.
The Photos app has a Markup feature that can re-export a copy. It's not a true compressor, but cropping in Photos and saving the cropped version produces a smaller file when you don't need the full frame.
For ongoing storage management, Settings → Photos → Optimise iPhone Storage stores full-resolution photos in iCloud and keeps smaller versions on the device. Doesn't help when sharing, but keeps the phone's local storage manageable.
What if you need to keep quality high
AirDrop preserves the original. For sharing between iPhones, iPads, or Macs without recompression, AirDrop is the right tool. It transfers the original HEIC or JPG bit-for-bit, regardless of size.
iCloud shared albums also preserve quality. Add the photo to a shared album, send the link, and the recipient sees the full-resolution version. The catch is that only iCloud users see it natively; web viewers get a downscaled web copy.
Email with Actual Size keeps the original quality. The trade-off is hitting attachment caps quickly. A single 5 MB photo at Actual Size is fine; ten photos blow past most email size limits.
Cloud links (Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive) skip the email and chat compression entirely. The recipient downloads the original. This is the right answer for photographers sharing wedding or event galleries with clients — quality stays intact and the email/chat layer doesn't recompress anything.
Original quality export to Files app. iOS's Files app stores photos at full resolution when you save them via the share sheet's Save to Files option. From there, copy to a USB drive, AirDrop to another device, or upload via the desktop browser without any platform-side recompression.
Tools and alternatives
App Store options: Image Size, Compress Photos & Pictures, and Photo Compress all offer batch compression with a quality slider. They work fine but require an install, ad views, or in-app purchases for advanced features. For occasional use, the browser flow avoids all of that.
Shortcuts app workflows. iOS Shortcuts can chain Resize Image and Convert Image actions into a single share-sheet button. Build a 'Compress for Email' shortcut once and it runs in two taps every time afterwards.
