How to Shrink Image File Size on iPhone

iPhone photos are routinely 3-5 MB. Here's the no-app way to shrink them.

The browser method

Open the freeimgtool compressor in Safari, upload the photo from your camera roll, compress, save.

  • Open Safari and go to the Image Compressor.
  • Tap the upload box.
  • Pick Photo Library and choose the photo.
  • Move quality to 70.
  • Tap Compress, then Download. Long-press to Save to Photos.

Why iPhone photos are big

iPhones save photos at high resolution by default (~4000 px on most models) and often as HEIC for storage but JPG for sharing. Either way, the source is much bigger than most sharing use cases need.

Smaller dimensions help too

Resize to 1600 px on the long edge before compressing if the photo is destined for a chat or social feed — combined with quality 70, that gets the file under 500 KB while still looking crisp on any phone.

Frequently asked questions

Does HEIC work?

Convert HEIC to JPG first via any free HEIC converter, then compress the JPG.

Does iOS share-sheet compress?

It can, but the result is unpredictable. The browser flow gives you exact control.
