How to Stitch Photos Into a Panorama

Most panorama failures happen at capture, not at stitch time. Five minutes of shooting discipline fixes almost all of them.

Rotate, do not walk

The single most important rule. Turn on the spot, keeping the camera in roughly the same place, rather than stepping sideways between frames.

Walking changes your viewpoint, which changes the relationship between near and far objects — the effect you see when you move your head and nearby things shift against the background. Stitching software has no way to reconcile two frames that disagree about where things are relative to each other.

Rotating in place keeps that relationship constant. Everything shifts by the same angular amount and the frames genuinely describe one continuous scene.

Lock the exposure

The most visible flaw in an amateur panorama is not misalignment. It is a brightness step where one frame was exposed for sky and the next for ground.

Left on automatic, the camera re-meters every frame. Pan from a dark building towards a bright sky and each frame is exposed differently, producing a finished image with obvious vertical bands of different brightness.

Lock exposure before you start — on most phones, a long press on the screen locks both focus and exposure. Meter for the brightest part of the scene you intend to include, since blown highlights cannot be recovered while shadows partly can.

Lock white balance too if your camera allows it. Automatic white balance drifting between frames produces colour steps that are just as visible as brightness ones.

Overlap generously

Aim for roughly a third of each frame to appear in the next one. That gives the stitch plenty of common content to work with and leaves room to correct small inconsistencies.

Too little overlap and there is not enough shared detail to join confidently. Too much and you are taking many more frames than necessary for the same coverage, which increases the chance of something moving mid-sequence.

Keep the horizon at a consistent height in the frame as you rotate. Letting it drift up and down forces the stitch to correct for it and costs you image at the top and bottom.

Subjects that defeat stitching

Anything close to the lens. Near objects shift dramatically between frames even when you rotate perfectly, because the rotation centre is not the lens's optical centre. A fence in the foreground will not line up.

Moving subjects. A person walking through the scene appears in two frames at different positions, and depending on the stitch you get a ghost, a half-person, or a duplicate.

Water and foliage in wind, which change texture continuously so no two frames agree on detail.

Repeating patterns like tiled walls or regular railings, which offer many equally plausible alignments and can join at the wrong one.

Portrait orientation for wide scenes

Counterintuitively, holding the camera in portrait gives a better wide panorama. Each frame is taller, so the finished strip has more vertical extent after cropping.

You need more frames to cover the same horizontal angle, but the result is usable rather than a letterbox slot two centimetres tall.

This matters most for architecture and landscapes where you want to keep both foreground and sky. For a horizon-only seascape it matters less.

Beyond landscapes

Stitching is quietly useful for documents. A long receipt or contract photographed in overlapping sections joins into one readable image rather than three attachments.

Whiteboards are another common case — standing far enough back to fit the whole board usually makes the writing illegible, so shooting it in halves and joining them preserves both coverage and legibility.

Before-and-after comparisons, product shots from multiple angles, and multi-part diagrams all read better as one image than as a set of files someone has to open in order.

Working within a frame limit

Browser-based stitching holds every input in memory at once, so there is a practical ceiling — commonly four images at a time.

For longer sequences, work in stages. Join the first group, then feed that result back in with the next images. The output of one pass is a valid input to the next, and this scales as far as you need.

Plan the grouping before you start so the joins fall in sensible places, ideally on low-detail parts of the scene rather than through the middle of the subject.

Finishing

Panoramas almost always need cropping. Small variations in how you held the camera leave ragged edges at top and bottom, and cropping to the largest clean rectangle is the last step.

Expect to lose more vertical extent than you anticipated, which is exactly why shooting in portrait orientation pays off.

Panoramas are also large files by nature. Compress once at the end, after cropping, rather than compressing the input frames beforehand — the same resize-then-compress ordering that applies to any image.

Why do my panorama frames not line up?
