Transparency survives, size does not

WebP is the only widely supported format that gives you both a real alpha channel and modern compression. Converting a transparent PNG to WebP typically cuts the file by 25 to 35 percent losslessly, and much further if you accept a lossy encode. The transparent background comes through exactly as it was, including soft anti-aliased edges on logos and icons. This is the reason to prefer WebP over JPEG for any graphic that has to sit on a coloured background — JPEG would flatten it onto white and ruin it.

Browser support is no longer a concern

Every current browser has read WebP for years, including Safari, so using it on the web is uncontroversial. The remaining gaps are outside the browser: some older desktop software, a few print services, and various upload forms that were written against a fixed list of extensions. If a WebP gets rejected somewhere, that is almost always the reason, and converting to JPG or PNG solves it. For anything that will be displayed in a browser, WebP is the sensible default.

How much you actually save

The saving depends heavily on content. Flat graphics, icons, and interface screenshots — the things PNG already handles reasonably — improve by around a quarter to a third. Photographic content inside a PNG improves enormously, because PNG was the wrong container for it in the first place. Images with large transparent regions do well, since WebP encodes runs of fully transparent pixels efficiently. A design export with a photo, a gradient, and a transparent margin often halves.

Quality settings and what they mean here

The converter encodes WebP at the quality you choose, defaulting to 90. Because your source is a lossless PNG, there is no accumulated loss to compound, so 90 is genuinely conservative and the result will be hard to distinguish from the original. Drop to 80 for web assets where size matters more than pixel-exactness. Keep 90 or above for anything with fine text or hard-edged line art, where lossy encoding shows first.

Practical notes

Pixel dimensions are unchanged; only the encoding differs. Input is capped at 5 MB. The alpha channel is preserved rather than composited, which is the whole point of this particular conversion. Everything runs on your own device in the browser, so nothing is uploaded and there is no queue.
