The specification
YouTube wants 1280 by 720 pixels, a 16:9 ratio, in JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP, under 2 MB. The minimum accepted width is 640 pixels, but there is no reason to go below 1280 — the thumbnail is displayed at many sizes across the site and app, and the largest of those is close to 1280 wide. Anything smaller gets upscaled and looks soft on a desktop home page. Anything larger is downsampled by YouTube with no benefit to you.
Why 2 MB is easy to exceed
Thumbnails are usually designed in an editor and exported as PNG, and a 1280 by 720 PNG with a photographic background, a gradient, and a few glow effects lands between 2 and 4 MB with no trouble at all. That is the most common reason an upload gets refused. The fix is not to shrink the design — it is to change the encoding. The same thumbnail as a JPEG at quality 85 typically comes in around 200 to 400 KB, which is a fifth of the limit and visually indistinguishable at the sizes a thumbnail is ever displayed.
Design for the small size
The thumbnail you are editing at full size is going to be displayed as a strip about 200 pixels wide in a mobile feed. Text that looks generous at 1280 is illegible at 200. Three or four words at very large weight is the practical maximum, and thin fonts disappear entirely. Faces read well at small sizes; wide landscapes do not. Check your design by scaling it down to 210 pixels wide and looking at it — if it still communicates, it will work in the feed.
Resizing without softening
If your source is much larger than 1280 wide, the downscale is where quality is won or lost. This tool reduces in successive halving steps, which averages detail down rather than sampling across it, so edges and text stay crisper than a single-jump resize produces. If your source is smaller than 1280 wide, upscaling will not invent detail — it interpolates, and text especially will look soft. Rebuild the design at full size rather than enlarging a small export.
Limits
Input up to 5 MB, output up to 10000 pixels on a side, original format preserved so a transparent PNG stays transparent. Aspect lock is on by default, so entering 1280 as the width fills in the proportional height — turn it off and enter both 1280 and 720 if your source is not already 16:9 and you want it stretched to fit rather than cropped.
