What the filter actually does
Three operations stacked in order. First an edge-aware smoothing pass flattens skin, fabric, and background into broad regions of near-uniform colour while leaving boundaries intact — this is what removes photographic texture without turning the whole image to mush. Then the colour range is reduced, pushing those regions towards the limited palette that cel animation uses. Finally the detected edges are drawn back over the top as dark outlines. That sequence is the visual recipe behind most anime stills, and it reproduces the look convincingly without any model needing to be downloaded.
It is not a generative model, and that is deliberate
A deep AnimeGAN would redraw your face in a genuinely illustrated style, and it would need a GPU on a server, which means uploading your photo to reach it. This runs classical computer vision in your browser instead. The honest trade is that the result keeps your actual facial geometry rather than reinterpreting it, and it will not invent anime eyes or restyle hair. What you get is your photo rendered in an anime treatment, finished in seconds, with the image never leaving your device.
Which photos work best
Good, even lighting with clear separation between subject and background gives the strongest result, because the edge detection has clean boundaries to find. Portraits and half-body shots work better than wide scenes, since the flattening has fewer competing details to resolve. Photos that struggle: very dark or backlit shots, where edges are ambiguous and the outlines land in the wrong places; extremely busy backgrounds, where every leaf becomes an outline; and heavily compressed images, where JPEG blocking gets detected as edges and traced.
Getting a better result
Crop tight before you convert. A portrait cropped to head and shoulders gives the filter one clear subject and produces a much cleaner image than the same photo with a cluttered room behind it. If the outlines come out too heavy, a softer source helps — a photo with less micro-contrast produces fewer detected edges. And if the source is a small, heavily compressed social media download, run it through the image enhancer first to reduce the artefacts, otherwise those artefacts get traced as if they were real detail.
Output and limits
Input up to 5 MB. The long edge is capped at 1600 pixels before processing, which keeps the filter fast inside a browser tab and is well above what social platforms display anyway. Output is a downloadable image with no watermark and no signup at any point. Nothing is uploaded, which for photos of your own face is the part that actually matters.
