Algorithmic, not neural
Real neural style transfer runs a photo and a reference painting through a network and optimises a new image to match the content of one and the texture statistics of the other. It is remarkable, and it needs a server-side model — which means your photo would have to be uploaded. This tool takes the other route: each style is a hand-tuned pipeline of classical filters that reproduces the characteristic look. The results are stable and repeatable rather than surprising, they finish in seconds, and your photo never leaves the device.
How the styles are built
Watercolour softens edges and lays down translucent colour washes, mimicking pigment spreading into wet paper and pooling at the boundaries of a wash. Oil paint uses heavy bilateral filtering with posterised colour to imitate thick pigment laid in visible strokes, where fine detail is subsumed into blocks of tone. Each style trades detail for texture in a different way, which is why the same photo can look excellent in one and muddy in another. Trying two or three on the same image is the fastest way to find the fit.
Choosing a photo
Painterly filters reward simple composition and strong colour. A landscape with clear bands of tone, a portrait against an uncluttered background, or a still life all translate well because there is a clear structure for the filter to simplify towards. Busy scenes tend to turn muddy, since the filter flattens detail everywhere and a frame that was already crowded becomes an undifferentiated mass. Crop before you apply, not after — the filter's decisions depend on what is in the frame.
What it will not do
You cannot supply your own reference painting. Matching an arbitrary style requires the neural approach and the model that goes with it, so the tool ships a fixed set of looks instead. It also does not restructure the image — objects stay where they are, in the same proportions, at the same scale. It is a rendering treatment applied to your photograph, not a reinterpretation of it, which is the same honest limit that applies to the cartoon and anime filters.
Limits
Input up to 5 MB, with the long edge capped at 1600 pixels before processing to keep it fast in a browser tab. Output downloads with no watermark and no account required at any point. Everything is computed locally using canvas operations, so nothing is uploaded and nothing persists after the tab closes.
