What makes a photo look like film

Three things separate a film frame from a digital one, and only one of them is colour. The first is the black point. A digital sensor clips its darkest pixels to pure black — 0, 0, 0, no information at all. Film never does. Even an unexposed negative carries some base density, so the deepest shadow in a print still holds a little colour. Lifting the black point so nothing in the frame is pure black is the single change that does most of the work here, and it is why a photo can read as film before a single grain is added.

The second is halation. Light bright enough to pass through the emulsion reflects off the film base behind it and re-exposes the layer from the wrong side, spreading a soft reddish-orange bloom around anything very bright — a window, a lamp, the edge of a lit face. Digital sensors have an anti-reflective layer specifically to prevent this. Reproducing it means isolating the brightest part of the image, blurring it, tinting it warm, and screening it back over the frame.

The third is grain, and the detail that matters is that grain is not uniform. Film grain comes from silver halide crystals, and the shadows are where the fewest of them received light, so noise is heaviest in the dark areas and almost invisible in the highlights. Noise applied evenly across the frame reads as a digital artefact, not as film. Tie its strength to the inverse of each pixel’s brightness and it starts to look like emulsion instead.

The disposable camera look

A single-use camera had a fixed aperture, a fixed shutter speed, a plastic lens and a flash that fired at one power regardless of the subject’s distance. That combination produces a very recognisable failure mode. Anything close to the camera is blown out by the flash, anything more than a couple of metres away falls into darkness, and the corners of the frame are darker still because a cheap lens cannot illuminate the full image circle evenly.

The film loaded in those cameras was usually ISO 400 or ISO 800 — fast, so it could cope with poor light, and grainy as a direct consequence. Fast film also has less saturation and lower contrast in the midtones than a modern sensor, which is why a faithful emulation reduces saturation rather than increasing it. Turning colours up is the instinct that makes a filter look like a filter.

The plastic lens contributes one more artefact: it does not focus every wavelength at the same point, so red and blue drift apart slightly toward the edges of the frame. The effect is subtle in the centre and grows with distance from it. Pushed too far it looks broken; kept small it reads as a cheap lens, which is exactly the impression this look depends on.

VHS and camcorder effects

A camcorder recording is not film at all, and the artefacts come from the tape rather than from an emulsion. The most visible is the scanline: an interlaced signal drew alternating horizontal lines, and on a still frame that shows as fine dark banding across the picture. Because the line count was fixed by the broadcast standard rather than by the image size, the banding must stay at a constant number of lines regardless of how large the photo is — scale it with resolution and it disappears on a big image.

The second is chroma bleed. Analogue video recorded colour at a much lower bandwidth than brightness, so colour smears horizontally across edges while the detail stays sharp. Red and blue drift sideways relative to green, which is why a red jacket against a pale wall develops a fringe on one side. The third is tracking noise: where the tape head lost alignment, a narrow horizontal band of the picture is displaced sideways and brightened.

All three sit on a 4:3 frame, because that is the only aspect ratio consumer video had. Cropping to 4:3 is therefore part of the look rather than an optional extra, which is why it is switched on automatically for this preset and left off for the others.

Adding a date stamp

A date back was a small module that exposed the date onto the corner of the negative at the moment the shutter fired, using a seven-segment LED display behind the film plane. Because it was light burned into the emulsion rather than ink printed on the paper, the digits glow slightly and pick up the same warm cast as the rest of the frame. The colour was almost always orange, the digits were slanted forward, and they sat in the bottom-right corner.

The format is worth getting right, because it is the part people recognise without being able to say why. Two-digit year first, then month, then day, separated by spaces rather than slashes — the display had no room for punctuation. A leading apostrophe on the year was common. Nothing else about a photo dates it as precisely or as cheaply.

One practical note: the stamp should be applied after the grade and the grain, not before. A real date back exposed the negative separately from the scene, so the digits carry the glow of the LED but not the grain of the film. Grading the stamp along with the image makes it look composited, which is the opposite of the intent.

Making a photo look old

Start with Fade and leave everything else alone. Fade controls how far the black point lifts, and it is the setting that decides whether the result reads as an old photograph or as a colour overlay. Somewhere around the middle of the range is usually right; past about three-quarters the image starts to look washed out rather than aged, because real prints fade unevenly and a uniform lift cannot imitate that.

Add Grain second, and be more generous than feels comfortable. Grain is dampened in the highlights by design, so a setting that looks strong on the preview thumbnail is often correct at full size. If the image still looks digital after the fade is right, grain is almost always what is missing — not more colour.

Use Warmth last and sparingly. It pushes amber into the highlights only, which is how printed film ages, but too much of it turns skin orange. If faces start to look sunburnt, the answer is less warmth rather than less saturation. Combining a heavy fade, strong grain and a date stamp will get you most of the way to a convincing period photo; adding a heavy colour cast on top of those is what tips it back into looking like an app.

Why is the 4:3 crop off by default?

Because cropping to 4:3 removes a strip of the image, and on a phone photo that strip often contains somebody's head. It is locked on for the VHS look, where the aspect ratio is part of the effect, and optional everywhere else.

What resolution do I get back?

Up to 2000 pixels on the long edge. Larger uploads are scaled down to that before processing, which is what keeps a 12-megapixel photo from locking up a phone browser.
